Default Shifter Drum Issue

I have some clicking and clacking when I pull my clutch in when i'm in 1st to 4th gear. Dealer mechanics said he thought it might be my shifter drum and it would take about 7 hours of labor plus parts to fix. Does that sound about right for how long it will take?

Can I still ride with the issue or will it wreck my tranny?

I have a 06 Dyna Street Bob with 60,000 km on it.

TIA

Rob

On my 96 wide glide, I had the rear exhaust, starter, top cover and shifter mechanism out in about an hour.

Me thinks 7 hours is a bit excessive.

Pulling in the clutch lever has absolutely nothing to do with the shifter drum.

Do you only hear the noise when the clutch lever is pulled in?

Do you hear the noise both when moving and when stopped?

Do you hear the noise when stopped, in neutral, clutch lever released?

I don't hear it when I have the clutch pulled in and not moving.

I can hear it while riding but it seems to be more pronounced when the clutch is pulled in, that could be because now the engine is idling and their's not as much noise.

Can you hear it with transmission in neutral, clutch pulled in?

If so, put the transmission into first gear, does the noise stop?

the transmission is a constant mesh - the gears are always engaged by not locked to the shaft. When u shift the shift drum moves shift forks which slide locking dogs into the selected gear - locking that gear to the shaft. Not sure where they're going with the suspected shift drum problem but I'd be very careful if I were u.

When you say be very careful are you talking about shifting the gears?

The sound really only happens when the bike is moving, when the clutch is pulled or released. When I sit idling at a light there is no clicking sound

Thanks all for your input

My first guess would be the throw out bearing, my last guess would be the shift drum. Shift drums don't typically go bad. 7 hours is reasonable on your model because the whole gear set has to come out. But again I can't see how the shift drum is causing the noise when you pull in the clutch. Pull it apart your self or get a second opinion. HI -per cycle is in Edmonton,Al Miles is the owner very sharp guy and trust worthy.

Maybe like they say, as you describe..but I would think you would only hear it at idle in neutral. However, pushing the lever while not running or heaving shifting could damage it so it is not pushing all the way in gear or you have one dog left on a gear....when the last one goes, it will get real quiet and you will need to double shift then.
