Primary/Transmission/Driveline/ClutchFind answers to general powertrain, primary and transmission. Have clutch issues and need suggestions? Post them here.
When I shift (up or down) and let the clutch out I get a clunking sound. The dealer said it was the clutch basket and that it was normal.
If I only slightly pull in the clutch lever and shift then let out the lever it does'nt seem to do it.
I have the exact same issue when I release the clutch quickly, but only when the bike is really hot. I have no idea of what it is, but it is NOT normal, at least not by my definition.
The way I define normal is, it has always made that noise, or all bikes make that noise once they reach a certain mileage and age. Nobody I ride with has this problem. Zoomie, does your bike make this noise?
From my experience so far EVERYTHING thats sounds strange or sounds like it is falling apart is NORMAL according to the stealers!!!! Unless you bring the bike in broken down and in the back of a pick-up truck!!! Been to 3 different stealers about noise coming from left side primary area that is getting progressivly worse and is now starting to cause accelleration problems but the stealers say its normal. Funny how they can tell this when they have never even left thier air conditioned office to listen to the bike!!!! I am going to run this bike until something breaks and then let them pay for a more expensive fix!!!!
If it's the same as mine it's gear lash in the tranny. Try this. coast at about5 mph in first or slower. Pull the clutch in for a second and let it out quickly. There will be a clack sound each time. Coasting with clutch in takes up the play in the gear box in one direction. Letting the clutch out quickly reverses the contact points to the other direction. On the road going through the gears, I never hear it unless I shift in slow motion like and old fart. If this is your sound, it's normal and nothing you can do with it. Ron
This is an underrated post. If you are riding slow in low gear and are able to replicate the clunk/tap sound by disengaging and engaging the clutch it is likely gear lash in the tranny.
