I just got a 83 shovel and shes leaking oil or gear fluid its clear. it looks like its leaking from behind the rear primary.im new to harleys amd hoping you guys can help me out?

 

Trany fluid has a diff smell If it is trany fluid in the trany instead of reg oil Check the trany fluid level Is this a stock prim setup or did someone change this to a sealed prim setup ?

 

It still has hoses going to the back of it but i havnt took it off yet. Its clear and kind of thick

 

Tranny seal is gone or the output gear bushing is going , anything to do with the primary leaking is gonna be dirty & black period .

 

How can i fix that?

 

Primary comes off if it's just the seal , the bushing the tranny comes comes out and completely apart .

Sorry but it's not that bad really .

How do u know which one?

 

I never did have much luck with the funky main seals in these type tranys You got to take off the inner prim to get to it so why not replace the seal and the spacer p/n 35070-82A Also look at the main shaft for wear and don't forget the main drive oil seal 12013A

 

You'll know when you get the inner primary cover off , to check the bushing just push and pull on the sprocket if you get any side wiggle at all it's bad .
