Swapped to Amsoil today...
So.. I bought my 2007 Standard at the end of June and at the time I was told it had been in for it's 1000 Service but I never followed up to check to make sure, and Since then I have been wanting to change the fluids. So I ordered a Service Manual and some Amsoil. I got to get the work done today. Swapped engine and primary oil to Amsoil 20w-50 and the Transmission to Amsoil 75w-110. IIRC the bike now has about 3850 miles on it and Fresh oils...
My only hang-up really was not being able to get out all the engine oil. I warmed the bike, drained the oil using the drain plug but was only able to get out about 1.5 quarts. I decided to try the NPT plug and got out about another .5q. But still there's another quart in the engine? So I figure the filter my relieve the rest but to my avail only about .5 more if that. So, is there something I am missing? I did a search here on the board to see what, if anything I was missing or doing incorrectly. I came across a thread with some info stating that the NPT plug was typically used to drain residual oil before splitting the engine case but not commonly used for routine oil changes. Any input on this would be great.

You should not worry about getting it all out. HD oil system so the engine should be pumped dry for the most part. The only way I know of to get it all out is with a oil filter adapter. Put on adapter add oil run engine kill engine when oil runs clean. Top off oil, run up temp check oil level.
If you do not get it all out eventually it will all be changed out after multiple changes.

I guess in the end it just comes down to lubricating the moving parts...

Just a heads up, but all the info I have says NOT to pull that NPT plug. As I understand it, that opening is for manufacturing or machining purposes only, and the plug is loctite-ed in at the factory. I've heard horror stories of guys cracking the case trying to get that sucker out, although I don't know personally of it happening. Every competent H-D and Indy mechanic I know says the same thing, leave it alone and don't worry about any residual oil. Hope this helps.
Now, have I ever pulled that plug? Just once, years ago, never again.

I checked the oil prior to the oil change, it was full.
As for the NPT plug, I relocktited it and put it back. I may not take it back out whereas the next change should get out any "old-factory" oil and should all be Amsoil next time. All is well at this point, no leaks or anything just smooth running...

Speedy, you might want to check out the Scavenger system, if you do a normal oil change you leave from 28-32 oz. of dirty oil in the bike, I use this product and it gets out all the oil.http://www.roguechopper.com/
