Default Auto Chain Tensioners...???

I read this on another Motorcycle site.....have you heard this ...cause my Harley shop

hasn't. Some dude suggested that one of the first things that need to be done to new

Harleys is change the Auto tensioner cause it....

applies way too much tension to the chain....and

fills the primary oil with metal shavings.....

said to change it to an M6 or HB125 unit....whoever sells those ??

probably bad info. .........

I almost find that hard to believe...

I installed a M6 and it performs flawlessly!

Quieted down the chain, it's one less thing I have to worry about in the primary area...

I put the auto chain tensioner on my bike. It shifts a lot better with it. Who cares if it gets a few metal shavings in the primary oil? All that oil is there for is for the chain anyway. I'm pretty sure Harley's engineers are a little smarter than the guy who posted it.

I've got the factory one, and after 20,000 miles, aint got no metal shavings. "Some dude" is gonna have a heck of a time convincing me I have to change it.

reduce metal wear...I'm all for it.

I don't know about any metal shavings, after all it is a plastic shoe that tensions the chain. I installed the HD model on my Train and have had no issues. Shifts much better.

I had a customer come in to a shop when i was there and complained about the noise from 5th gear. The bike shop did not find anything that would cause more than normal but did say the chain was too tieght and seemed suprised

Sorry, couldn't resist the poke! IMHO the auto-tensioner is just fine unless you're drag strip racing the bike then I could see a problem. The tensioner works by spring-loaded pressure to take up slack but cannot back back down once it sets so what you're asking is will it over-tension the chain? Yes it can during extremely hard accelerations where the chain lags. However, I haven't heard anything bad being said about them here at school, anyways, as far as premature wear, chain breakage, etc. Better things to buy than a redundant part. I've got the "old style" and have thought about retro-fitting and I wouldn't put a crappy part in my bikes.
