I put the auto chain tensioner on my bike. It shifts a lot better with it. Who cares if it gets a few metal shavings in the primary oil? All that oil is there for is for the chain anyway. I'm pretty sure Harley's engineers are a little smarter than the guy who posted it.
I've got the factory one, and after 20,000 miles, aint got no metal shavings. "Some dude" is gonna have a heck of a time convincing me I have to change it.
I don't know about any metal shavings, after all it is a plastic shoe that tensions the chain. I installed the HD model on my Train and have had no issues. Shifts much better.
I had a customer come in to a shop when i was there and complained about the noise from 5th gear. The bike shop did not find anything that would cause more than normal but did say the chain was too tieght and seemed suprised
Sorry, couldn't resist the poke! IMHO the auto-tensioner is just fine unless you're drag strip racing the bike then I could see a problem. The tensioner works by spring-loaded pressure to take up slack but cannot back back down once it sets so what you're asking is will it over-tension the chain? Yes it can during extremely hard accelerations where the chain lags. However, I haven't heard anything bad being said about them here at school, anyways, as far as premature wear, chain breakage, etc. Better things to buy than a redundant part. I've got the "old style" and have thought about retro-fitting and I wouldn't put a crappy part in my bikes.
