Over from the Touring section and in need of guidance
HI All,
I've tried the search function and I think I got the answers I need but I would appreciate some confirmation. I am helping a friend with his 1996 Sportster. It has two problems.
The first is a clearly worn out ignition barrel and I will be replacing this for him when it comes in. It looks to me as though the ignition barrel wiring disappears into the main harness. I am planning on just splicing onto the original wires and I want to confirm that this is standard practice?
Secondly, his speedo is not working. I don't now if it's the speedo that has a problem or the vehicle speed sensor. 1. Where is the vehicle speed sensor located, and 2. Is there an easy way to test either the sensor or the speedo?
Many thanks for any help.

Woodworking answered your 2nd question.
For your 1st, yes, just splice the wires with your new ignition. OR.......
You can do what I did and buy an ON/OFF 2-way toggle switch so you don't need a key to start the bike. VERY easy to do, and less tempting for people who wanna try to steal it.
