I've run a Dakota Digital mini speedometer since my wreck-rebuild 2 years ago and thus far it's been reliable. (About 15,000 miles on it currently.) Recently though it has stopped recording speed about half way to (and from,) work. I called Dakota Digital for some tech advice and they suggested replacing the speedo sensor first. (I had already cleaned the sensor and I'm getting the same results.)
When I shut it off and then restart the bike however, the 'sensor' comes back on and operates for another fifteen miles before it fails again. (I can kill the ignition and switch it back on while rolling and that action also successfully restarts the process.)
So has anyone ever experienced a speedo sensor with this quirk? (I'm wondering if the ignition coming back on might well be restarting the speedo itself, and never mind the sensor.)
Yes - put a speed sensor in it - if the blinkers don't cancel properly when it's occurring that's another tell tale.
Thanks Ed,
I'll do the speed sensor swap (only the 2nd one in 16 years.) The turn signals are disconnected from the speedo and TSSM now and flash until I turn them off. (Creative wiring during the front end rebuild.)
