Default Running rich question

I have a 2007 883 Custom. The bike is fuel injected and just turned over 1000 miles. The only modification is the addition of Screamin' Eagle slip on mufflers. I am going through the 1000 mile service and the only issue I feel the bike has is it smells like it is running rich. The plugs look perfect. Can the adjustment to the primary change make any difference in the fuel mixture? It is part of the 1000 mile service, but I have not checked it yet. No engine codes have ever come up. Thanks for any help.

If you haven't messed with the ECU, it is highly unlikely you are running rich. The bikes come from the MoCo at about 14.7 AFR, and that is pretty lean (ideal stoichiometry, but lean for engines). Adding the exhaust would basically leave it the same. The primary would not affect the AFR, but it is a good thing to check at the right service intervals.

Thanks. I thought it might effect the timing of the fuel into the cylinders if it had too much slack. ECM is stock. It may just be how the exhaust smells on all of them. Thanks again.

Yeah. There is a crank sensor that tells the ECU when to inject/how much, along with one for the spark too. Remember, these bikes don't have catalytic converters, so they will smell different than a car or truck.

Adjusting the primary chain will not affect the ignition timing or fuel injection systems. If the plugs are clean (white) the engine is running lean. With only 1000 miles on the clock, you have nothing to worry about. Get out there and put another 20,000 on it this season.
