first thing i did was :
1. checked oil , was fine
2. put in clean air filter
3. changed plugs.

ORIGINAL: HD7585

Had a ign module drive me nuts once. Found out after 2 modules that the primary case was heating up due to lack of oil.The heat got the lower cases hot enough to crap out the module. Only happened at hwy speeds. let it cool down and it ran great. Don't know if this could apply to a sportster
rechecked everything today, a lightbulb went on when i checked my aftermarket dipstick and i decided to put the stock one in for a check. the stock stick is shorter than the aftermarket stick, so i was running 1/2 qt low. i corrected level, went on highway, but after cruising at 75, it did it again, so i had to keep it under 65 mph all the way home (56 miles) to keep the temp down .
it didnt misfire or stall keeping engine cooler, so i will change out ignition module on friday or saturday.
i will report back if this fixes problem.

I had a very similar problem that was finally solved ... Have you installed chrome spark plug/headbolt covers? If you have, take them off and see if the symptoms disappear. It turned out in my case that the spark was intermittantly arcing thru the covers into the head and grounding out. HD tech said he'd seen it before and it was common. HD refunded money for the covers but it cost $75 to have the tech troubleshoot it! Made me a bit angry that they sell them under the circumstances. Hope this helps you or someone else.

I was going to say, no spark then jiggle things around and spark began means it's in the primary electrical system(ignition). Misfire, backfire and stalling if together sounds like a module. Good choice!
