Default How do you do Compression checks?

How to? I'm used to the old car motors were we would ground out the coil wire so you didn't damage anything. Do ya'll disconnect anything or ground out anything to prevent damage on the newer computers? Is there a How To thread? Thanks

There's a how-to thread here. I tested mine cold and hot to check for any difference, only 2 lbs. I removed my spark plugs, put 'em back in the spark plug wires and then grounded the spark plugs to the engine with copper wire and alligator clips.

Remember if the # is low squirt some light oil in there and if the # comes up then the rings are the culprit. A leak down tester is another great tool for diagnosing compression issues.

Pull plugs and ground them; make sure the battery is fully charged; connect the tester, hold throttle wide open and crank the engine through enough cycles, say 5-6, but crank until the needle stops. A weak battery will produce inaccurate results. Plus what the others have said. You can test hot or cold; in my experience there won't be much difference if the top end is tight; a little but not much.

As djl describes, but we go 8 complete cranks, with battery charger in place.
