Default 1999 ultra

I had a 96 eg standard I traded 3 years ago for a dyna wideglide and know I am thinking of tradeing that for a 1999 ultra. The bike had no tour pack and has been stripped down to look like a sg. I think it is a great looking bike. It only has 33 k on the clock. Any things I should know about it?

EFI or carb? If EFI it would be the MM injection which some have had hard times with. Could always convert to carb if you desired. Cam bearings were an issue on the 99's. As well, if it has tensioners those would still be needed to be checked and/or changed to hydraulic or gears. Check the circuit breaker as well and see if it has been upgraded or not. 99 has good crank and Timken bearing so that's a plus.

pinion bearing was a potential problem on pre Oct '98 production.
bracket for the tip over switch can crack and break, causing random shut down of the motor.
last year for single caliper brakes.

the restrictive heads limit power to about 55 HP- same as the 80" Evo motor.

the TC 88 heads can be opened up to allow power gains of perhaps 7 HP, add a stage 1 and you can be above 70 HP pretty easy...same time do a 95" and you might be near 80 HP

i would not ever consider a magnetti marelli efi system

What MK and dawg said. With tensioners and recalled circuit breaker addressed its a solid long running motor. ( Just went passed 135,000 on mine.)

Don't pay too much though. How much are they asking?

Good solid bike especially if you do what Dawg and MK have indicated. Mine is a 2000, and I've got 93K, and that engine is virtually bulletproof. New hydraulic tensioner's were a great addition, but it runs great and doesn't use any oil. Get it for a good price, and ride the tires off it. Clean fluids are the key to long life on those motors. Pull the dipstick and look at the condition of the oil. Request maintenance records too if you can get them.

I have a 99 EG, just turned 61k miles, no problems, I replaced my tensioners at 38k, they were shot, you can upgrade or the less expensive way is to replace the stock ones and check them every 20k miles, gear drive is also a option on our bikes, they usually do not suffer from crank run out. I did do a S&S 97 inch big bore and ported the heads, also when I did the tensioners I put SE 204 cams in, bike is making over 90 hp now. Mine is a carb, if it is the old fuel injection I would still buy it if it is a steal and would convert to a carb, if it is a carb I would buy it, 99 to 02 had the best bottom end motors, forged and timkin crank bearings, a good solid bike that will last, I love mine and would not sell it for a new one with all the problems I read about like the cranks slipping.

My current bike is a '99 e-glide with fuel injection 55k miles on it. It's the second bike I've owned with fi. I haven't had any problem with it. I bought the manual and began reading up on the "mystery" of it. It doesn't seem that complicated, and only has a small number of parts that could break or wear out. It may not be as adaptable to performance changes as the delphi fi, so I guess it depends on what you plan to do with the bike. I used to like to spend money on performance items, but now I go with if it ain't broke don't fix it, way of thinking..,,

Either way you want to go 99 to 02 are great solid bikes that will out last any new engines, to bad harley went cheap on the engines after that, and from what I hear keep going cheaper and cheaper, I mean cranks slipping??
