the difference between 05 and 06 is the ohm of the speakers themselves. If you're running a stock head unit from an 05, then you'll need to stick with a speaker setup that accommodates the 8 ohm load of the head unit. 06 is when HD started using the HK head units vs the Radio Sound head units previously and the 06 and up are 2 ohm head units.

Or you can add an amp and then put whatever speakers in there you want.

well what's better is whatever you decide to do to accomplish your goals. If you're just wanting to replace speakers then you'll need to stick with an 8 ohm speaker and that is going to severely limit your selection as it's not a common speaker, usually cost more than others, and performance will suffer.

If you're asking me what I would do;
then yes I would add something like a RF PBR300x2 and a good pair of 6.5" speakers up front. There are a ton of speakers that are good matches for both the bike and that amp. It all comes down to what you want to spend. If you want to do it right once, then the PBR300x2 and a pair of Biketronics 7.1" speakers for the fairing and be done with it.

you got lucky- the J&M 7.25 speakers are a disappointment.
