Harley OEM headsets: What's the difference between these?
Digging around the garage, I came across two sets of H-D headsets. One I know for sure came with my '10 Ultra (box says Boom! Audio); the other one, maybe my previous '06, '03 or '02. When I plug in the newest version (77117-10), I can hear music through the helmet speakers if I turn off the switch on the panel. On the older version (77147-98), no music, no matter what I try. Verified that the both plugs were plugged in correctly.
As near as I can tell, both seem to look identical: same seven-pin plug into the console, same ply into the head-set, same speakers. Was the 77147-98 not designed for music? All the head-sets I've had, I never plugged them in once, so I have nothing to compare this 77147-98 to. Even the instructions that were in both boxes are identical, including the numbers J04877.
I would appreciate if someone could set me straight on what's going on here.
Thank you.
Oh, two more questions: I don't necessarily care about the communication part of the head-set. What could I buy that would be for music only (helmet speakers only) with no microphone that plugs into the OEM console outlet.
Or, what happens if I were to cut off the microphone right at the housing... would the stereo speakers still work for music, or short everything out?

Hmm, something doesn't sound right. I recently got a 2014 Ultra Limited and it came with 1 Harley headset #77147-98A. I hope I didn't get a headset that was meant for the pre 1998 bikes? Anyone else with a 14 Limited, maybe check the headset part # and see if its the same one I received? Thanks

What position is the switch on the panel on? Three position switch, one through speakers, 2 CB,Intercom though headset, radio through speakers,3 position everything through headsets.
On 2014 you have to change the set up from speakers to headsets in the Com set up screen. Hope that helps?

I guess no one has tried cutting off boom mike; anyone with a headphone/no mic/OEM Harley compatible plug-in recommendation?
