Default Showa rear shocks, oil weight?

Hey all,

I am going to swap out the oil in the Showa shocks I received from a friend.
Wanted to know if anyone "knows" the actual oil weight (viscosity) used at the factory? PN: 54565-09.

When I received the shocks there was the obligatory leakage so getting the correct oil & weight would be really useful. It seemed really thick like 30 wt oil.

Regards to all.

.

I replaced mine with 10wt on Sunday. On a road trip now and they are much better. You want to get all the old oil out and then put in 10oz of new oil in each shock. The way I got e old oil out was to take off the valve and tubing on the bike, the attach it to the shocks and put in 20lbs of pressure with my hand pump. The hold one upside down over a container and remove the tube. The air pressure will force the oil out. Repeated this twice with each shock until just air came out. To fill them I got an irrigation syringe at Walgreens They are marked for ozs. Fill it, then insert the tube from the shock into the end of the syringe and force the oil into the shock. You have to disconnect the tube from the shock a few times to relive the pressure. Takes a while, only 2oz for each syringe with the one is bought

Good luck

I cant see how a heavier oil will make the stock shocks ride smoother? My self I find the stock shocks feel like a hard tail, with or with out air pressure.
Could some one explain the heavy oil thing.

Slows damping, and less air pressure is needed, heavier oil is a big improvement.

Well, that kind of makes sense. I ride solo only at 180 lbs I can see if I road 2 up the heavier oil could help, but what the hell, all it will cost is a qt of oil and some time.
I will give it a shot and up-date my findings. Thanks.
