Australian Harley Fan’s List of Cheap Hacks Includes Free Horsepower

A person demonstrating cheap motorcycle hacks

A recent installment from Old Not Dead is chock full of free or cheap motorcycle hacks that the vlogger wishes he knew about sooner. Perhaps you’ll agree.

This isn’t the first time that H-D Forums brought attention to a video from long-time Harley-Davidson rider Aymen Fares. Some past content that’s worth a watch includes Fares explaining some common new rider mistakes, as well as how to corner harder. Fares’s YouTube channel also has a pretty catchy name: Old Not Dead. And that’s exactly what he wants you to be; an active older person, and not dead.

When he’s not cruising around Melbourne, Australia on his Street Glide Special, Fares is a tireless promoter of exercise and diet. It’s a minor relief that “diet” doesn’t just mean watching calorie intake, but also eating natural, non-processed foods. “Join me in giving age the middle finger salute,” says Fares.

By now, you might be wondering what this has to do with cheap or free tips for riding and maintaining your motorcycle. Well, one of the dispensed tips is to lose weight to effectively give your bike a higher power-to-weight ratio. Generally speaking, every five pounds of weight shed will yield an extra one horsepower. That’s not to mention that handling will improve, too.

What are the other cheap motorcycle hacks?

So what else is on the list of nine free or cheap motorcycle hacks? If your influencer status is waning, you can take an Instagram-worthy selfie by setting up (which could involve downloading an app) your smartphone’s camera for interval shooting. After that, it’s matter of mounting your phone on a tripod  — or merely lean it against something in a pinch. Focus the image on the exit of your favorite corner, then set the start time, the desired interval (like one photo per second) and get riding through that photogenic corner. At least one or two of the gazillion images are going be keepers.

Without giving away the surprises of watching the entire video, we’re also impressed by a budget cleaning tip. That is, using Lemon Pledge to polish paint and chrome. To be fair, it seems like some H-D Forum members have known about this trick for a while, but it’s the first time yours truly heard about it. Best of all, if you’re away from home, you can pop into any grocery store and grab a can for a quick detailing.
