BREAKING NEWS: Helmets Save Lives – Report People with Common Sense
It happens every single year. Hundreds of thousands of bikers rush into the streets of Daytona Beach for the iconic 10 day bike rally, and with them come many opinions regarding helmet usage.
Bikers say they want their freedom, the wind-in-hair feeling, to feel liberated and unrestricted by a metal shell around their head. Ultimately, those are the same reasons why middle-aged women buy Mazda Miatas, but who am I to judge?
The statistics speak for themselves, across the country, motorcycle deaths have risen consistently in 2011, 2012 and 2013, according to the most recent federal data available. Not only that, but half of the 485 motorcyclists who died in 2013 weren’t wearing a helmet.
There’s something crazy about bone and soft tissue meeting the pavement at 50, 60 and even 80 miles per hour, somehow it all seems to disintegrate in dramatic fashion, yet wearing a helmet is still frowned upon by most.
Daytona Beach emergency responders have seen it all, and year after year they get as many helping hands in area hospitals to keep up with the never-ending cases of bone fractures in the arms and legs; road rash and burns from exhaust pipes or from falling on concrete. And as it’s to be expected, emergency workers say there are a considerable number of head injuries.
We all ride our motorcycles to have fun, let loose, and get away from the ordinary, but the whole point of motorcycle riding is to be able to come back home, park our bikes, and reflect on an awesome ride, and not to stare at the bright and cold lights of an emergency room.
Think about it…
