When a botched surgery made it hard for him to get around, this H-D enthusiast got creative — and he ended up with a Harley hot rod!

If there’s one thing we know for a fact, it’s that you can’t count a passionate Harley-Davidson enthusiast out. Time and time again, folks just refuse to give up their beloved hobby, no matter what life throws at them. That’s why there are a slew of options out there that allow bikers to keep riding, even if they’re disabled. But Herefordshire, England, resident David Innes had something a little different in mind when a medical problem threatened to end his riding days.

The 81-year-old found himself struggling to walk following a botched ankle replacement surgery a few years back. This, of course, meant that he would need a mobility scooter just to get around. The former musician proceeded to pick up a small electric scooter that are popular with seniors, but he found it rather embarrassing. And with a mere 7 hp, Innes couldn’t stand the fact that it lacked “speed and cool.” So, he took action to rectify those problems.

Innes did a little searching and found a company in Cincinnati that produces hot rod mobility scooters. He was more than happy to plunk down a little over $5k U.S. for the “Harley-Davidson” like ride. Not only does it look much cooler than your average scooter, but this thing tops out at 40 mph and can even tow a trailer! It might not be a real Harley-Davidson bike, but the neighbors sure don’t know the difference. “‘Everyone says here comes Dave on his Harley so we nicknamed it a Harley,” Innes told Metro News.

Most importantly, the sweet scooter allows Innes to continue to enjoy his freedom, in spite of his disability. “It brings a lot of joy to me because it allows me to do what I want to do. Just because I’m retired from singing and I can’t walk doesn’t mean that I have sit to in my chair like an old man. Live your life to the fullest, that’s what I say. My wife will tell you that’s what I do.”

Spoken like a true Harley-Davidson enthusiast!
