Before ‘Harley and the Davidsons’ Debuts, Variety Has Some Thoughts

You might feel like 50 percent of our posts here on HD Forums have been about Discovery Channel’s six-hour min-series Harley and the Davidsons lately, but it’s for good reason. How often do you get a nationally televised studio production that’s all about the history of our favorite brand? Of course, the difficult part about this is that we haven’t seen it yet and don’t know how good it’s going to be, even if it does have Daario Naharis playing Walter Davidson.

So, until the show debuts this upcoming Monday, Sept. 5, we have to rely on others who were able to get advanced press screenings for their opinions. One of those lucky outlets is Variety. TV critic Sonia Saraiya watched the show for them and explains, “Harley and the Davidsons is not good, exactly, but it is a very specific kind of successful; it is a love letter to American motorcycling that will find its way to many passionate viewers.”

“Character, chronology, and the creation of a sense of setting are all subordinate to the miniseries’ first goal, which is to have fun with motorcycles,” she adds.

Woof, a bit harsh, but that doesn’t necessarily deter us from checking it out. The entire premise of riding motorcycles is fun, so if the show offers some fun, that’s not so bad. I, for one, am not an extreme critic of acting or plot lines, as long as what I’m watching is enjoyable and makes me smile. If nothing else, there are only three parts to this, so it’s not a serious time commitment.

Will you still watch?
