Looking Back on Harley-Davidson’s Diamond Anniversary (Video)
We remember the time: 1978, and Harley’s first 75 years.
The year 2020 marks 117 years that Harley-Davidson has continued to set and then continually raise the bar on two (and three)-wheel transportation. As we wait in anticipation of what the future holds, we too take a look back at some of the more memorable moments and bikes in H-D’s legendary past.
In 1978 Harley-Davidson was marking its 75th anniversary. And this video, posted by King Rose Archives, was made at the time to celebrate the diamond anniversary.
The video uses rarely seen photos, and some very groovy tunes, to show the evolution of the brand and the bikes. It takes us through a sepia-toned journey through the company’s history, from its humble beginnings to its worldwide domination. It also has rare and fascinating footage of founders William S. Harley and Arthur and Walter Davidson, Harley’s role on the front lines during wartime, early racing footage, the growth of the factories, motorcycle stunts, headlines of the day, vintage advertisements, and more
But the real star, of course, is the bikes. The video has some stellar images of almost every make and model in those first 75 years. It also shows simply but effectively how Harley became a part of our lifestyle and culture. The music, hair, and style may change, but the classic cool and power of the Harley motorcycle will always remain the same.
