Politician Uses Harley in Reelection Bid

By -

The Harley brand is synonymous with many things. But is politics really one of them?

Gritty. Blue Collar. Hard-working. Those are but a few of the adjectives that come to mind when one thinks of Harley. Which, coincidentally, also describe the kinds of things you’ll hear politicians call themselves as in those wonderful campaign ads we all love. So it only makes sense that a politician would use Harley as a metaphor for themselves and what they stand for, right?

That’s exactly the idea behind Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner and his latest ad. The incumbent is kicking off his reelection bid, surprisingly enough, not by slinging mud at his competition. But by cruising around the varied landscape of his home state, clad in black leather. Different? Absolutely. But it sure beats listening to the same old childish, borderline slander we’re used to, anyway.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Rauner’s solo ride might also signal another metaphor. It would seem that Rauner’s supporters are long gone, leaving him to continue his agenda alone. So the lone hero rides in on his steel chariot to save the state from budgetary purgatory. And he sums it all up with a simple statement. “We can throw in the towel, walk away and leave our future to the same corrupt career politicians. I choose to fight.”

Regardless of which side of the political spectrum you fall on, it’s a pretty solid ad. Obviously, we appreciate the fact that Rauner is a Harley guy. And portraying himself as a normal, bike riding dude is sure to resonate with folks in rural Illinois at the very least. Because no matter how you spin it, the power of the Harley brand is undeniable and unmistakable. Even in the dirty, controversial world of politics.
