What Would Life Be like Without Harley-Davidson?
Used Harley-Davidsons
One of the most troubling things contributing to the Harley sales slump is that there are plenty of barely used bikes on the market. The record sales over the past 20 years (minus the recession slump of 2007-09) combined with plenty of older riders giving up riding, or in need of retirement money, have flooded the used market. If you want a Dyna, or don’t want something overly computerized, this is a great time to buy.
But these bikes won’t last forever, and who knows how durable Milwaukee 8 and Twin Cam motors are going to be. Luckily, S&S Cycle and other aftermarket companies pretty much guarantee that Evo motors, Shovelheads, Knuckleheads, and the rest will be around until the whole world looks like Mad Max.
As long as you don’t need to ride a brand-new bike with the latest gadgets, this is certainly an option.
Personal Choice
Me? I’m only in my 40s and I have 25 years or more of riding in me. If Harley stops making new bikes I’d be happy to keep riding the twin cam Dynas as long as you can get parts for them. Now, if I had to make a choice between an Indian and a Triumph, it is all going to come down to what sort of riding I’m into in my retirement. But hopefully Harley-Davidson will continue producing motorcycles, so I never have to make that choice.
