Biggest problem with living in NYC or LI, you are stuck first going thru the City to get anywhere. I would suggest Eastern LI to you, but then you have to go thru Brooklyn and Queens. Jersey and PA are probably the best bet for you. Good luck.

You didn't say what kind of roads you were looking for. I prefer winding country roads, so I go to lower upstate NY, Bear Mountain and/or Harriman State Park and the surrounding areas, beautiful scenery.
Go to google maps and look for whatever else interests you, like food!! There's a place called Rhodes North Tavern that I've eaten breakfast at, outside on the deck with a stream rolling past.
Good luck!!

Work your way to Route 22 north of White Plains. (South of White Plains sucks with congestion, 2-lane and commercial settings.) A good place to join Rt. 22 would be via the Bronx River Parkway at the Kensico Dam. Thereafter, keep going north on 22. If you're ambitious, take Interstate 84 eastbound a short distance toward Route 7 north thru Connecticut. You can literally stay on scenic Rt. 7 into Vermont. A stop in Kent, CT [NOT Kent, NY] is always nice and is loaded with bikes on sunny Saturdays and Sundays.
