Default Rushmore vs. M8 Touring

I bought a '15 Street Glide Special and regret selling it. I'm retiring in less than three years and plan to buy another HD Touring model before then. I'm loosely looking now but refuse to overpay when prices are bloated.

I'm heavily leaning towards a Rushmore Road Glide Ultra or EG Ultra Limited. I'm also looking at Rushmore CVO's. I like the M8 bikes but the sumping issue worries me. Some of the "fixes" don't address the core problem as I've seen people make modifications that includes rebuilds that didn't solve the problem. Also, if I buy an M8 bike, I would want the RDRS system which puts me in the new bike category. I know the Twin Cam engines very well as I've been wrenching on them for 20 years and have most of the tools for them.

Wondering who has gone from a Rushmore to an M8 with and without regrets. What do you think is the best improvement to the M8 bile?

If you're interested in an RDRS-equipped bike, then you need not worry about sumping. RDRS came out in 2020 m/y bikes and the sumping "issue" was addressed the year prior.

Sumping was not the giant issue people think it is. Most pre-'20 m/y bikes never had the issue to begin with. My '17 still has the stock pump and never sumped. Food for thought.

Early Spring I went from a Rushmore Road King to a 2021 Road King M8. Liked it so much that I traded my 2015 RG for a 2021 RG Limited late last year. I also, recommend the HD Stage II, makes the bike feel 200lbs lighter. I kept the stock mufflers because I'm not into the loud exhaust.

I went from a TC to an M8, and never regretted it. My ‘17 M8, has the HD Torque cam, latest oil pump, and primary breather. 35,000 miles, and no issues.

As @strych9 said, the sumping issues were much rarer than most internet forums make it seem, and if you look at a 2020 or newer bike, the latest oil pump is already factory installed which took care of the potential issue. Same for trans fluid syphoning to the primary. HD pushed out a vent for the primary which took care of the issue and started factory installing the vent either 2019 or 2020 model years. I can say the M8 will run circles around a comparably equipped twin cam and a lot of people are totally happy with the M8 in stock form. Find something that "speaks" to you and ride the crap out of it!

Good info, thanks everyone. I'll be looking for deals but in no hurry. I need to ride an M8 again as I haven't since 2019. At the time I didn't come away with any wow factors when I test rode 3 different M8 touring bikes and got back on my 15 SGS. I never thought my TC needed more power, but there are some nice features on the newer bikes.

The tour pack, lower fairings, water cooling, etc. add a couple hundred pounds to an Ultra that a SGS doesn't have. Just something to keep in mind.

Every newer model Harley I've owned since '69 has been better than the previous model.

I don’t see where he’s wrong. Big bore stock head M8’s are putting out full SS 124 Twinkie numbers. My 110 outlaw is stout as hell but even with the cnc ported s&s heads etc, it doesn’t put down the numbers of just a big bore/cam/throttle body m8.
