Default Red Dot + TPMS Warnings

2020 RGL

While riding at any speed, a red warning light in the speedo along with the tire pressure warning light in the tach side have been coming on what seems like randomly.

Occasionally, just the red dot (security system?) comes on and not the TPMS warning. When I check the digital panel, the tire pressure shows fine pressure. While I don’t rely on the display for actually tire pressure, it showed both tires doing fine if a little off (42F/48R). They don’t flicker, they’re just on then off anywhere from 1 minute to 10 minutes.

I can’t correlate any operating condition with the issue. Any ideas?

Check for codes first. Couple of easy things to check, your rear tire pressure at 48 psi cold could be triggering a hi pressure warning. Normal is 40 psi cold. Also check to see if you have any burnt out bulbs on the bike.

Ah, didn’t know that over inflated could trigger a warning from the TPMS. Thanks.

The PO installed additional LED light bars in the rear on the side cases. Maybe the red “dot” warning has something to do with those? The weird thing is the seemingly random occurrences.

You need to get the codes. Probably a pinched wire somewhere that gets triggered by sudden movement.

The "red dot" is dual function. Yes it is security, but it is also your trouble light. You need to check for codes.

When that happened to me, I called the service manager at my local HD shop. So one of the many things this red dot does is light bulbs out or loose. That was my problem had a bulb out.

Thanks! Maybe I should get codes (haha).

I’ll do that tomorrow for sure. I’ve been dealing with my ‘92 Fat Boy and ‘98 Fat Boy S&S build getting them ready for sale.

Thanks again for the reminder of something I should’ve defaulted to.

48 psi is probably borderline but after riding for a while that 48 psi can become 55 psi from the heat and the friction and will most certainly generate a TPMS warning. The red light is a different issue, burnt out bulb, wiring or weak battery or connections.

I've never had TPMS on a Harley before.

I know most cars, the TPMS are supposed to last 7 years+.

But..... maybe your TPMS batteries are getting weak....??

Yes, the TPMs sensors generally last 5-10 years before they have to be replaced. When the internal battery starts to fail, the TPMs light will flash for a bit before turning to solid. He can also toggle the infotainment screen to the tire pressure display and will see dashes instead of pressure reading.
