OK Guys here is a good one, Can someone help me out with a little wire placement? I just installed an 09 CVO tach set up on my 08 Fat Bob. The harness off the new tach has nowhere to go so it needs to be wired in. The harness has 5 wires,
orange
black
green with black stripe
orange with white stripe
brown with grey stripe
I do not have a service manual so if someone can please advise me on where to splice in I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for all the help. Mud you were right all the colors matched except the gound. The tach wire is solid black, the speedo ground is black with a green stripe. I used a test lamp to confirm and it worked perfect. Thanks again for the help. Pictures of winter mods to follow.
I'd like to add a tach to my Fat Bob, but I don't want to spend the $500 and installation fee at the dealer. Any suggestions on a more cost effective solution?
packetjunkie, you can purchase a late model HD tach kit from a dealer or eBay. They are pretty simple to install, the hardest part is wiring in the tach signal.
It will be hard to find a white faced tach that matches your speedo. I have a black face kit in the basement.
If you are not comfortable around wiring, many independent shops will do it for less than $500. The HD tach with cup and mount runs close to $200 new, I think. There are also aftermarket tachs out there.
If you search this forum for tach you should find several ideas. If you more into function than style, there are many small digital tachs, relatively inexpensive.

I do not know about the later models, but when I put a tach on my 03 FXD, the instructions that came with the tach (HD tach) were worthless when it came to the wiring. I had to study the electrical diagrams in the service manual for a Dyna model that came stock with a tach, in order to figure out the correct wiring hookup. Once I did that, it was very simple. but following the instalation instructions that HD provided with the tach was impossible.
This is how a #68986-04 HARLEY DAVIDSON Silver Face Mini Tach Kit, with #67524-04 HARLEY DAVIDSON Mini Tach Tapered Gauge Housing and #67268-06A MINI-TACH MOUNTING KIT fits on the Fat bob. The HD instructions were straight forward but I chose to use pin 3 from the ECU for the tach signal. If you want something that looks like this, there is at least $150 in parts, probably close to $200 there whatever you do.

Finding that silver face mini tach is close to impossible. I had one I found on order for several weeks before I received a 'cancellation notice' from the vendor.
