Default Correct wrench to take off a 2006 Dyna rear axle nut

The correct wrench to take off a 2006 Dyna rear axle nut is 28mm

Everything else is babble so if you want to read it, fine if not, just go with the above info...

If I can save someone an extra (or in my case 3) trip to Sears or your local tool shop, that's what I wanna do with this post...

Yesterday I needed to take the back axle nut off my 2006 Street Bob.
The 7/8 wrench was too small, so I called a buddy. Sure he says, 15/16, awesome, cool I can drive down to Sears. Went there, picked up an open end and 15/16 socket. Got home, put the wrench to the nut....15/16 NOT.

Ok, people makes mistakes, it's Saturday, I got time. So I figured I'd go to the source to find out the correct size. So, I rung up my local HD dealer. The guy who answered was cool, he even put me on hold to find out....1". Very cool, hey I even have a 1" socket. Put it up to the nut.....NOT.

Ok, then I turned to where I probably should have started...HD Forums. In a post from 2007, one member posted 1 1/8", another said they went metric in 2006 and the correct size is 28mm, and 4 more posters stated 1 1/8"....So I went with the majority and another trip to Sears...

Got home....Uhhh, yeah you guessed it a bit loose fit. Would work, but really not the right size. So....another trip to Sears and got home to find 28mm a perfect fit.

So if I can help some poor lost soul like myself...and them some gas...

Thanks for letting us know. It seems 2006 rear axle nut is the same as used on 2007 Dyna models (item 2 in diagram below, p/n 8039)

I've added this info to my ***dyna models metric sizes database***

3 trips to Sears? Sounds like going to an awful lot of trouble. Wouldn't it have been so much easier if you had just measured it in the 1st place?

I have found that a 15" Crescent works wonders. When in doubt just put a tape measure or caliper on it to get the exact size.

A micrometer would have saved you a lot of running.

Not if he had to go buy a micrometer first. HAHA!

My 2010 takes a 36mm for the axle nut.

Definately invest in a set of Calipers. Saves a world of time. However this reminds me I need to go get a socket for my rear axle nut. When we did my buddy's 2010 Fat Boy's tires we found I didn't have one that fit and had to run to Sears to get one but that socket is his.
