Default HD Corporate Thinking? Rant...

Can anyone here explain to me why does HD continue working with HK that make the worst radio head units. I will be upgrading from a 2013 Ultra Limited to a 2015 Ultra Limited. So now I hear that the new Boombox 6.5 infotainment system really sucks with all kinds of intermittent problems down to the GPS. Why didn't HD get a GPS company like Garmin who been in the business of Navigation for who knows how long? to equip the bikes with real touring Navigation like Zumo RoadTech devices built into the Boombox. On top of that all, HK want to charge a pretty penny to update maps. Garmin does it for free on their Life Time Maps and Traffic devices. This is a high-end motorcycle company with lots of stupid decisions. I have been contemplating on moving to Indian Roadmaster.

I'd say Harmon Kardon undercut all the competition and gave HD the best deal. Just how the world works bro! I agree. HD needs to step it up with the head units and actually I don't think the new head units are too bad except they have them tuned to the proprietary Boom system. That's the part that sucks. No way you should have to flash your bike or use a DSP to get good sound on an aftermarket system!!

I can see how upsetting that it is to you, but did you expect HD Corporate to think any different from other larger corporations? The name of the game is buy low, sell high. As a business owner, I can't argue with the business model.

No matter what brand you purchase there are upsides and downsides. This goes for all items. The real trick is to find the value, weigh the good versus the bad, figure out what's acceptable to you and roll with it. If you do that and come to the conclusion that Indian is it, more power to ya...... happy motoring!

What gps system does Indian use on their bikes?
There is aftermarket options for radio replacement, speaking of that, has anyone heard any more about Biketronics radio that they were working on?

Mike300, I guess your one of the lucky few who is satisfied with your bike since your bike is a 2018 model maybe HD got it right with those new models. I was pointing to most Rushmore models in my case 2015 Ultra Limited i'm about to own. I have friends with these models and they all complain about the head unit problems or haven't you heard there are tons of YouTube videos.

I am a heavy user of GPS navigation when touring, I design custom routes and destinations for my group of friends so we can ride on country back roads we haven't been on like some riders I know that like killing the same roads and are boring. Unlike HK, Zumos have features made for touring not just a point A to point B destination.

Thanks for the concerns.

The last thing I'd like to do is mount my Zumo 665 on a bike that has a dash with a built-in GPS. I know so many bikers do it now b/c the feel the same way I do.

Junior, maybe you should look up some videos on using the Boom nav. I've planned many routes on Ride Planner and am able to route any road i choose. You can place waypoints to keep your desired route without planning the shortest or fastest route. My 6.5 infotainment system has yet to fail me. I have a 14 Limited

There was a user here that linked an informative video on using the planner software. Good luck woryh whatever you choose
