If my understanding of it is correct it will be mono for the bridged pair but stereo front to back instead of left to right like we're used to.

The amp input signal from the headunit is what dictates your left or right stereo signal.

The amp when bridged is a mono output signal. So you are basically wiring a 4 channel amp as a higher power 2 channel amp.

If there was a input channel selector switch on the amp you could get by only using 2 RCA inputs to 2 channels without a rcaY and achieve the same results as the amp would combine the input channels internally.

Yep, that's what my tiny pea brain figured as well.
