I am trying to figure out what is happening here. I have the RF saddlebag kit and a pn4.1000d amp. front speakers are prv 6mb250-ndy. One of the rear RF 6x9 blew about a week after installing it. I first noticed a burning smell then the amp started to clip above 4 bars volume. The speaker read about 0.5 ohms when I pulled it. The front speakers are fine. I have the amp set by a voltmeter at 19.5 volts since they are rated at 100 watts. I assumed it was just a bad speaker. Since it was going to take about 6 weeks to get RF to exchange the speakers under warranty so I bought a pair of Polk MM1. These are rated at 150 watts. I didn't change anything on the amp. I ran these for about 2 weeks and again am smelling a burning smell. When I looked at them this is what both speakers look like. The still both read 3.5 ohms.
The amp is 140 watts and with the gain set to less than half and these being rated at 150/450 I can't believe I am pushing them too hard. What could be happening?
you are pushing them too hard, most likely with not the cleanest signal you could send them. the gain control **** is not a volume control, it levels the input voltage to the internals in the amp. get yourself in the neighbor hood with your volt meter, but use your ears in conjunction with the meter. get a voltage range and listen for dirty sound/distortion and turn the gain back until it goes away, and eave it there. if it's not as loud as you want, buy better stuff. what are you using for a HU or source?

no line levelers. I did have coats in both bags. I was wondering if they did not have enough airflow but if that is the case speakers in the bags would be useless to me. Is it possible for a 140 watt amp to overpower 150/450 watt speakers?
Not running the Line Levelers is your problem. I'm actually surprised you haven't smoked your amp. Get a BT355 from Biketronics and it should solve your issues. If you have face and want to retain it you'll need 2 of them.
Also you cannot set the gains via DMM and call it good. That's just a starting point to go by. You have to finish tuning the gains by ear.
I thought the flash was supposed to level everything back out and get rid of the different eq curve between running and not running. Why would not having line levelers fry the amp?
