For that, chrome polish on a toothbrush elbow grease & time. Expect a couple of hours getting them nice and shiny. Toothbrush is for the crevices, the rest you can do with a cloth or pad. I used to take off the wheel and place it on a table in a shady spot so I could stand up and work on them. Once clean, use your favorate wax.polish and put a couple of coats on the wheel. Or pay to have a detail shop do it for you.
How are you going to remove the embedded brake dust?? Never EVER just wash and polish rims. Soap and water is not going to do it. Amateur move.
The wheel must be cleaned totally before the polish hits it. It would cause more problems just washing and then polishing. Any performance car throws out a ton of brake dust which must be removed before polishing. If you polish and break off a piece of the iron from the brakes, you will be grinding that into the chrome. This is why you use a product like Sonax. Same deal why you use IronX before polishing paint.
Not too bad. I would probably 80% good. Took me at least 2 hours. I used fine steel wool with the Sonax. The corners were tough. Used mothers chrome polish and chemical guys tire shine after.
Keeping up with wheels, and not letting them get bad, is huge. Especially on performance vehicles, German vehicles. The brake pads throw tons of dust on the wheels. I do a lot of BMWs and they are horrible for that.
Did you take any pictures of the Sonax working? Best wheel cleaner on the market I believe.
I have an ‘03 Wide Glide with spoke wheels. Cleaning the rear wheel’s center hub is a bitch. Spacing between the spokes is tight. The brake rotor and belt pulley also limit access to the hub. I’ve tried wrapping a long strip of (polished soaked) cloth around the hub and pulling it back and forth, but I could barely move the cloth. I cannot use a tool like a Mother’s polishing ball. Let me know if you have any suggestions.
Always cleaned my rims but the brake dust has been building. I have the chrome and black mags. Will ironx do the trick if I let it soak? Or is the sonax a better option. I have a bottle of ironx somewhere.
I like to use Iron X on clean dry paint/wheels. Some guys will use it on the paint before a wash.
For me, it works better when it doesnt have to work through anything and can sort of stick to whatever you want it to. But it will definitely take care of the brake dust, just more expensively.
