Default tank marks

Hi, I lifted a leather cover on top of my tank today, to find a chalky white markings on both the tank and the underside of the cover. I've removed this cover several times to wax the tank with no visible marks. I tried mother's scratch remover followed by Royal Blue cleaner wax to remove any scratches and clean it up. I used a detail spray on the underside of the cover with success. It helped the top of the tank but it is still marked up some. I might attribute it to a combination of washing the bike without drying it well under the cover and waxing around the cover leaving a film around the edges when wiping it clean. I wouldn't use the cover but my dachshund rides on it and it has worked well for some 5 years. I'm considering taking it to a professional detailer or having the tank sprayed with paint on top.Any suggestions before I make a move on this? Thanks in advance.

Ahab what you describe should be able to be buffed out. I would recommend that approach before painting the tank.

I'd like to see a pic of the dachsund on there at speed. Never thought about it but they are sort of aerodynamic.
