Default Another buffeting thread!

I have an '02 FXD with a windshield and get lots of helmet buffeting at highway speeds - okay below 80 KPH. I thought my windshield was too short for me but on a trip today I checked to see where the wind is coming from and it seems to be coming up around the SIDES of the tank, right ahead of my knees. If I sit knees WIDE apart, it is somewhat better.

I was thinking about getting a pair of fork-mounted lower wind deflectors but wont that also limit the air for engine cooling?

Thoughts? Experience? Other ideas?

Thanks!

I've never ridden behind a fairing that didn't produce annoying buffeting. I prefer to ride without.

was it a windy day? with a windy day you'll always have buffeting. it's even worse without a shield,

I have a shield like yours but I haven't had it on in a few months so I don't even remember what it's like. I only use it in winter to keep cold air off the torso.

right now I a Harley super sport on that I cut about 3 inches off of.. and it's great, very little buffeting. unles it's really windy..

on a calm day I also like to ride without a shield, but it's hell on a windy day..

I have a quick release hd windshield on clamps, when its nice out I move it down, with the bottom clamps below the triple tree, smooth no disturbance at all, when it rains or it is cold out. I move it up, not bad around town, but on the highway it will beat you up

I adjusted my quick release shield to sit more perpendicular to the ground and put one of the touring air dams (?) On the lower triple tree. It took a little trimming but for less than $30 and a little quality time with my favorite toy it was worth it. I have some air coming from around the tank but buffeting for me was reduced at least 80% at speeds above 65 and close to 100% below that. All the highways I ride here are 70-75 mph speed limits.

This is the setup I've been using for about 4 years now... works pretty well.... what the 'adjustment' is , is loosening the top quick-d mounts and moving the windshield as far forward as it can and still be clamped tight.

From my experience I have realized the taller the wind screen is the wider it will be.
I tried larger shields but the tombstone is by far my favorite.
Small but no buffeting.
Regardless of the size of one, wind noise will be there

Put the clear version of these on my forks and most of the buffering went away, at least until 85

Most buffering is actually coming up from under the tank. The air is drawn up due to the vacuum created by the windshield. There is a company that makes a windscreen with a vent, like a gold wing, and I've considered it too.

I ordered a set of lowers from Memphis Shades and they should be in next week.

Had a semi pass me the other day on the highway and riding in his draft was WONDERFUL! No wind noise, no buffeting, just lovely!

I also tried a full face helmet yesterday (instead of my 3/4 with visor) and that helps a bit to - the wind doesn't get under the visor and shake the helmet as much.

If using a full face helmet make sure to install the chin air dam. Amazing difference with and without it.
