Default really dumb question

Just bought a 08 dyna street bob finally and filled the tank up twice with the right hand gas cap. seems to only take about 2.5 gallons and was wondering if the left cap is another tank i need to fill? afraid of breaking that gauge or i would try to take it off with more force. figured id ask here tho first. take it easy on me lol

Don't try and twist off that left fuel gauge; it's a useless piece of garbage but, don't

There's a fuel crossover; look under the front of the fuel tank, you'll see a fuel line connecting the two halves clamped to the fuel tank barbs on the very front of the fuel tank...

And, welcome to the madness of the Dyna world

I like to fill the tank on my street bob starting on the kickstand, then I bring it up to level. Also monitor how far in you're putting the filler, you should be able to get it pretty close to the top if you pay attention. It becomes an art form, really.

The fuel gauge is typically inaccurate; sometimes wildly inaccurate. Learn your bike, and trust your ODO; use the trip meters; a fuel gauge has no business on an HD in my rather biased opinion. I covered that stupid fuel gauge cap with a chrome cover. I know my bike and trust my ODO. That tank on your ride holds 4.7 gallons

I can't believe this is my 40th year of riding; I've always fueled up sitting on the bike holding the bike upright and you're exactly right; fueling up with the bike upright is something of an art form

Is the bike new? Because it sounds like you may have a tank lift.

I find the fuel light comes on way early on mine as well. Like Tincup said, reset your ODO at every fill up and trust that....just use the fuel gauge as a reference. I replaced the stock gauge with one of the flush LED HD gauges and feel like its slightly more accurate but I also always use my ODO.
