It could be your not filling the tank quite full yet; as you spend time riding you'll get a real feel for that; like I posted, I sit on the bike but doing that you need to meter the fuel in slow so you can see the tank fill, you need to control the fuel handle as you're filling the bike; as it nears the top you can see it.

You need to get a baseline for your MPG average, from there you know your range and can ignore the fuel gauge and the pre-panic fuel light

I have a 2 inch lift kit on my Street Bob and when the gauge reads empty I've used about 2.5 gallons. It's an aggravation but it's the price I pay to look super cool!

Another little tip do not overfill your tank, leave a little room for gas expansion

And not only is a tank lift uber cool, you've given the heads added air flow and additional cooling. So, cool, in more ways than one

Gotta ask... so why, if the filler hole is at it's highest point when on the kickstand, would you fill up with the bike straight up?... just asking... I can see maybe some coming out the overflow then when taking the bike straight.. but have never noticed it.

I always fill mine on the kickstand, to the bottom of the 'splash guard' thing in the filler neck.

This is the way I have always filled my bikes. I go slow at the end of the fill so I can get it all the way to the splash guard.

Yep. Not sure the others get it. But youll squeeze more in on the stand.

I'm quite sure you are all correct, that you can get a bit more fuel in the tank with the bike on the jiffy stand; it's just a very old habit I have of sitting on the bikes when I fill them.

I grew up on a farm, we had huge overhead fuel tanks that were gravity fed. I'd run my mini-bikes and dirt bikes under the overhead tanks, reach up and grab the fuel nozzle and fill the fuel tank while sitting on the bike; no automatic fuel shut off so you learned to be methodical about filling the fuel tank.

And I still do it that way to this day; I've owned 2 touring bikes and a V-Max that required I get off the bike to fuel up; and I always managed to spill a bit of fuel on them

well i bought forward controls today for my bike and in the process managed to break the brake rod that goes into the master cylinder. the threads just sheared off inside where it screws in. also i was reading you dont have to take the primary off at all you can just cut the old shift lever and pull it out then plug it?

The gas gauge on my '01 FXD is pretty accurate overall, plenty good enough to trust with reason. Without fail, when I fill it up, it goes full, at about 100 miles or so, depending, it is about halfway, and when it gets down to the red it's time to gas up or be reminded to switch to reserve and start looking or panic...

also, I discovered that if I top it off when I am holding it upright, it will dump out the tank overflow if I don't ride some of it off before parking...BTDT
