Chatter from primary or compensator
My wife has the 2017 S. she loves it. first new HD for her.
It makes a chatter / chug when the RPM drops down to 750 or when letting the clutch out it first gear. I have never heard this before, sounds to me like the comp.
Dealer said break it in, they heard it and took off the primary to inspect. So we are not blowing wind. The dealer has been great about things. He said may have to put a new comp. in it if it doesnt go away.
Has anyone else with the S experienced this?
Thanks

Actually she rides better than most men ...but that's another story
When it's idling, it will dip down to 75o once and a while for a second.
When you let the clutch out in first taking off it does sound like the chain is slapping.
Ive had lots of bikes....I have had compensators apart and removed chains (stator replacements etc) also installed auto tensioners on pre 07 bikes.
Never heard a chain slap. Since the bike is new, and never owned a Dyna (ultras now road glide for me) was concerned.

You and the dealer are good men. There is just no polite way to tell someone how to really drive. It's best to blame it on the mechanical. She will get the knack of it and learn how to smooth it out.
The compensator is just cast and spring loaded so it smooths the impulses of the uneven engine. It goes in both directions apx 40 degrees before it runs out of travel. If you really slam it, it will make a clack. A lot of it just may be the transmission gear train backlash and a roller bearing motor.
It is not going to break in. The operator will break in. It will be OK. They are tough.
However, they will not take WOT, no clutch shifts very long.

Some one needs to watch her let the clutch out and rolling on the throttle, IMO sounds like the Missus isn't adding a little throttle in the clutch friction zone. Does your dealer have a stationary test ride stand that she can show the dealer what she does?
I've put about 1,000 miles on a rental M8 RK. I've noticed you can get going smoothly without a lot of throttle. But, that can't be making the Compensator happy.
Take the bike, start it up and put in first gear. Let the clutch out slowly til you feel the friction zone and the bike starts to move forward.. At that point yank the clutch in and back out to the friction zone at a fast rate.. The primary will rattle like an epileptic monkey trying to beat it's way out with a ballpeen hammer..
