Default Primary Drive Locking Tool

Why does Harley (in their service manual) say not to use the plastic wedge/step tool to lock the primary for service? Thanks.

I'd guess that plastic wouldn't last long. The clutch/compensator torque specs are pretty high so i don't think it would hold up.

On certain models the motor company cautions not to use the wedge because it will put too much stress on the inner primary cover, causing it to move.

Don`t ignore this warning.

Some models do not have dowel pins between the inner primary cover and the transmission case, 2006 Dyna had a lot of issues with inner primary cover to transmission case alignment.

YIKES!!!! Glad I asked!!! Can anyone recommend a good lock bar? I've used a piece of wood in my past, but if there is a good strong locking tool out there would like to get one. Thanks.

Yea I ordered a lock bar, waited for it, only to be the wrong one. Used wood again.

I just cut a 1" wide, 1/4" thick piece of iron to the proper length. Works great.

I used an old metal chisel. I filed the blade flat. Worked great.

That stepped plastic block works fine in the primary chain for those nuts, but not in the belt or wedged against the primary case.
