Default Mid Controls to Forward Control 2001 Low Rider FXDL

Hey guys,

I've read several other threads regarding this issue, and don't mean to be a nuisance. All the threads I've seen are taking about 06 and newer Dynas. Just curious is it going to be the same procedure for my 2001 Low Rider. Cut the shift shaft out and plug the holes in the inner and outer primary covers. Or leave it in, and cover the shaft with a deep cap. And also anybody know what parts I will need to complete this job regarding the forwards. I've been looking on J&P Cycles at some forwards, but they don't seem to be real clear on if they come with all the parts including shift linkage and the arm connecting to brake pedal to the master cylinder. Any and all help and info is appreciated. Thanks guys.

Several years ago I put forward controls on my ‘97 LR. Later changed those out to extended forward controls. Never needed to cut shafts or plug holes. These were kits from JP or Kuryakyn or ?, don’t remember, they simply linked to factory shafts. Both kits worked well.

Yeah, it's the same.
Whether you cut the shaft or cap it is your choice.
I used the Kuryakyn 9063 for my 09, (the 01 FXDL is listed) and the kit includes everything you need for linkage and a cap,, if you want to cut the shaft you'll have to find or fabricate plugs as described in all those other threads.
(if your long legged, you might want the 9064)

Many, many years ago I put fwd controls on my 02 FXD and 05 FXDLI. I used the kit from HD, the controls were the same ones used on the Wide Glides. So all the parts fit right, I used the cap on the shaft and kept the small inspection cover on the bikes.

Just do the cheap way... Highway pegs and heal shift.
It's easy, I did it on my sporty. Just take the mid controls off.

I still don't get it,,
If you remove the mid "controls" how do you shift or brake at all?
How can you heel shift when your foot is on highway pegs?
and/or
Brake when your foot is on a highway peg after removing the controls?

Do you mean you just removed the mid foot peg, installed highway pegs, and move your feet off the highway pegs to the control levers, then move them back to the highway pegs each time you shift or brake?
