Default Loose shift lever on the tranny

The shifter shaft needs to be replaced. The spline shows uneven wear and the new lever is loose. My question is this, can the shaft be removed with the tranny in the bike? When I pull the shaft out what could fall into the tranny case? It's a common problem and I thought someone must know about this.

It pulls out clean and nothing can fall in. I replaced mine (('06 Low Rider) but couldn't budge the bolts so had to have a shop remove them. Easy job other than that.

It's a "red neck" trick, but dod you try wrapping the shaft in aluminum foil? Or. can you file the new lever so it clamps tighter?

If you are talking about the lever that is attached to the shift shaft that goes into the transmission? I believe the lever is a different material than the shaft and then the softer material will give way. I saw an ad from a company, maybe Baker Transmissions, that are stronger and give a firmer grip on the shift shaft. If you have to pull the shift shaft, the trans. is opened up on the right side, the trans cover comes off and the shifter pawl is removed. Some have removed the lever with the primary all in place. Just takes some finesse and a ton of patience. Most owners are aware of this.
