The battery is less than a year old, so I don't think its a battery issue. From the comments on this tread so far it sounds like the starter clutch might be the problem. I've ordered an All ***** starter clutch, will share the results once I replace it. If that doesn't fix it compensator is next.
If it's less than a year old it should be under warranty. Possibly it was not fully charged when installed. So, instead of just thinking it's good, you need to test it, like suggested before. Get it charged up and have it load tested. At least you need to eliminate the battery as a factor before you start throwing parts at it.

Bad comps clunk not grind
This is true. The grinding noise definitely sounds like my starter clutch did when it failed. The issue is however that a LOT of starter clutches are worn out by compensator sprockets that are getting weak and allowing kickback on the starter. The Motor Company has tried to address it with many revisions of the compensator sprocket.

What tends to happen is at startup the slack in the weak compensator will cause a hard hit on the starter when you engage it. Before the starter clutch starts failing you quite often don't know anything is wrong. Once that banging has caused the starter clutch to fail you then hear the grinding sound in his video. This is a known issue that has been documented in YouTube videos and on these forums. Shoot I live in a rural area and the small dealer nearby has had to replace many compensator sprockets that have failed in this manner.

Again I am not saying beyond a shadow of a doubt that the OPs comp is bad, but it is something he might aught to look into because of the known history of these failures.

This fellow here details the compensator issues in the 96 inch motors pretty well:

This fellow here goes through the process of diagnosing and replacing a failing starter clutch (he also has a failing compensator as his viewers tell him in the comments)

Just a little extra info in case it helps out.

Good luck.

So I got an All ***** starter clutch. In the little piece of paper it says a steel ball must be placed into the shaft, but there isn't a steel ball in the packaging. Is it maybe inside the shaft already? I didn't want to open the plastic in case its the wrong part and I'll need to return it. This is the correct part right?

Any ideas? Thanks guys.

It's inside the old shaft. Make sure you dig it out and install it in the new one. That is the correct starter clutch / gear for a 07-up twincam and 06-up dyna twincam.

That's the brand I used. IF I remember correctly (that's a big if) the new bearing was already inside packed in grease. I dug it out of there to make sure. I'd recommend doing that to verify.

The one, that I've have had for a few years as a spare, has the ball rolling around inside the bag.

When I got my part from All ***** the little ball bearing was already inside the assembly packed in grease. I did not need to do anything except install the main assembly.

I think one of the links I posted details this but I'm nor sure. I bought my part back in May or June and the ball bearing was packed inside the unit with grease. I suspect yours is also.

Just go slow and careful and use quality tools to keep from stripping anything out and you will be good to go.

PROBLEM SOLVED!

Turns out the issue was the starter clutch. No problems since I replaced it, starts right up.

Thanks for all the help, really appreciate it
