Default Gas Cap

I have an 05 wide glide, so it has a fuel gauge on one side and a gas cap on the other side. Does it matter if I use a vented or non vented cap on this model of Harley?

Thanks guys.

Thanks, I'm looking at some aftermarket gas caps. So, can I use either one on my bike? Or non vented only?

I have an 05 wide glide, my cap is vented. So, if you replace the cap, it has to be vented.

I thought after about 1992 the caps were no longer vented, they had a hose that ran from the right tank to under the bike to vent the tanks. My 92 had a little nipple that stuck up in the right side tank fill hole. At least that the way i remember it. I have the stock tanks for that bike still i will take a look at them.

The cap is vented for suction, not pressure. The tank is vented from the vapor valve inside the tank to atmosphere.

Isn’t that to balance the fuel on both tanks on the older models and also on the new models?

And yes, you need the vented cap.

A vented gas cap is to allow air back into the tank as the fuel level goes down (on a tank with no other venting).
You can use a vented cap on a vented, or non vented, tank with no problem.
But if you use a NON vented cap on a NON vented tank, eventually it will 'vacuum' lock and quit running.
When in doubt, use the vented.
