Default taillight/turn signal issues

I was riding last week to work before daylight, and stopped at a redlight waiting, a cop was in next lane over and behind me, he blew his horn to kindly tell me my rear lights were not on...after getting home that evening I noticed also right turn signal does not work either...bought all new front and rear bulbs, as the right front right turn signal just glows brighter but does not blink....removing the rear tailight and brakelight assemble and opening it up I noticed mine has 3 wires from the turn lights on both sides, Blue, Violet and Black, but the Blue is cut way close on both coming out of the turn signals and there really is no place for them to go, as the plugin only has a 2 wire plug into the rear brake light assembly....violet and black....new bulbs still nothing, found a almost cut in half wire under the seat going back to the lights, fixed it and still the same, no lights and no right turn signal, ( left one has turn signal but no running lights come on....are there any fuses to check? if so where, I could not find and more bad wires . I am at a standstill on the rear lights..what should voltage be going to the bulbs inside 6 - 12 or what????
any suggestion as to what to check next? it had 1157 bulbs in both front and rear are those the correct ones?

Jeff

The rear signals if original will only be a single filament bulb (turn signal only).

The front turn signals are dual filament bulbs(running light and turn signal).

What model and year bike are you working on?

Are there any aftermarket lighting parts on the bike?

its a '99 FXDWG so if the rear are a single filament, what bulbs should that be? the ones I took out were 1157 double..... but the rear should still be on as driving lights always or not???

Thanks
Jeff

The rear signal lights are just that, turn signals, no running lights, single filament bulb, 1156.

The front are running lights and turn signals, 1157.

It sounds like someone has installed front turn signal housings on the rear of your bike. That explains the cut third wire. That also explains why there are 1157 bulbs back there and not 1156. 1157 and 1156 bulbs have a different pin arrangement, so you can't plug an 1157 bulb into an 1156 socket and vise versa.

Ya gotta help yourself here. You don't know if it's a 6 or 12 volt electrical system. Get a Factory Shop Manual and look at the lighting wire diagrams so ya know what each wire does. Then trace down the wires. Here's a HINT . . . Violet normally is turn signal, black is ground and blue running light.

oh man - feel for ya. Been in the same boat. I ended up taking the seat and rear wheel off. Found all the wires and got my trusty test light and found out what the hell in tom foolery someone did. Once I familiarized myself with the mess it was pretty easy.

Can't find 1999 but 2001 wiring diagram - https://serviceinfo.harley-davidson....ight=1999+dyna

It shows on page 43 the lights wired as Dan describes.

Default Custom accy fuse?

If the wire was cut and not capped it might just have blown the fuse. I had that problem before. I have an 09 fxdb it’s the cheapest and easiest fix so hopefully that’s it. On my bike the rear lights all go off the fuse labeled custom accy

Default Is your gauge cluster functioning?

Also when I blew that fuse the instrument panel worked intermittently so if that’s a problem too it’s probably just a fuse. Good luck
