wally world sells a 1.5A unit by schummacher called 'battery companion'

it's less than $19 and it's performance is similar to the $60 "Battery Tender" unit by Deltran.

that's pretty easy math

Schumacher makes excellent products but the $19 modelis "always on" which means it does not cycle on & off as needed to keep the battery topped off. Their $40 model does though but neither offer the pig tail plug in that you leave connected to the bike. The Waterproof 800 BatteryTender can be bought for $40 at auto parts stores. This wasn't meant to be a flame by any means, I just wanted to compare apples to apples.
I am comparing apples to apples.
The Schumacher unit does float, and charges the battery only when required. It is not "always on" as you state.
It comes with pigtails and clips
I am looking for a link from a few years back - posted on one of the Honda forums.
It rates the Shumacher unit ($17 at the time) higher than the Deltran unit.
If I find it - I will post it in this thread. It is technically detailed, and made my decision quite easy.
here's the link:

Sorry forthe stir. My info came from the current Schumacher website that their $19 model is manual and their $40 model is automatic. Here's a link:

Go down to the botttom of the page - the CX-10 model, which is just the charger, costs $62.95 direct from the manufacturer.I wouldn't buy theunits withthe displays. You probably canfind it cheaper from an on-line cycle stop (which is where I bought mine a couple of years ago).

I bought a black and decker at walmart last year for $20. It comes with different cables. I used the one that hooks to the battery and you leave it hooked up. It works great.

OK Grandpa - I had not seen the Shumacher website - MSRP adds to the confusion.

The deal is - the one listed on their site for $36.50 MSRP can be had at Wally for $18.44. Don't know why it is so inexpensive - but I'm not complaining. I bought 3 of these last season for $17.44 each, bought my kids each a package of chewing gum - and still had change from my $60. I could have bought one Battery Tender Plus for the same $60 somewhere else - then had to swap it around between motorsickle and boat batteries - I still think this is a no brainer.

Don't mean to hijack the thread.....Can somebody show me a pic how the quick connect is routed out of the batter cover. I've tried routing it through the top and side....doesn't seem possible?

Thanks!

I have an 05 Dyna and like "glide 05" I just attached a couple of connectors after cutting off the clamps and hooked them up to the battery. Just run the wire and connector behind the battery and brought it out by the ignition switch.

I bought the 40 dollar one from Harley. Been using it for a few weeks now and it seems to work just fine. Already had the pigtail on my battery from the dealer, so it's a quick plug and stay when I am not riding for long stretches.
Now that winter has reared its ugly head and I'm into my winter mods it's been put to use pretty frequently.

I have the Shumacher Battery Companion which I bought from Walmart for less than 20 bucks. It is supposed to switch on and off as needed. I dont leave it plugged in. I use it for an hour or two every week. I really dont trust the any unit to not boil off the battery. Since the battery is a AGM type (I think) and sealed I am nervous. You can check the voltage on thebattery with a meter. If your charged battery is around 12.5 volts savefor a new one.
