RE: RIDER DOWN / DougJ
Hey guys, THANK YOU ALL!!!for the kind thoughts and prayers.
I don't know where to start first, because so much has happened and gone through my mind.
I'll mention the kids first...... #@$%#&****^%$!&@ing other peoples kids. No they didn't didn't get away.
The young man didn't cut me off, he somehow managed to broadside me...... I in the right hand lane, he in the left. Decided he was going to make an immediate right turn into the service station from the center lane.
Unfortunately, I was in the right hand lane........ I think I was doomed from the start, with no way out.
On the bright side, I think the friggin Harley fugged up his right front end, more than he did the bike.
We were only doing about 25 mph in heavy traffic......... No cell phones involves or make-up
, just a young inexperienced kid and his buddy probably trying to get gas or something.
Never realized 25 mph to zero could happen so quickly
I never hit the ground, nor even dropped my cigarette, just stepped off the bike (kinda jerking my leg out from between his bumper and the bike).
Anyways, the boys were right out of the car, asking me if I was alright.... I told them NO I am NOT alright.
Cops, witnesses, Fire Department, Emt's, offers ofassistancefell out of the sky!!, I swear
This will get long, so either quit reading now, or be prepared to read.
#1) FEDX lady walks up to me says she saw the whole thing and would wait for the police, and give her account. She asked if I was okay, and couldn't believe I was actually standing up and walking. I think I told her I was a pretty tough SOB, thanked her, and she walks away to wait. A very nice lady.
#2) I think before I even walkedoff the crashed bike, the fire engine's siren went off and the guys are there asking me if I am okay, and checking the bike out (poor baby).
#3) EMTs got me sitting down taking blood presure, and asking about aches and pains, etc. All over me.
#4) Cops everywhere, and they are asking me if I am okay, and my account of what happened. I think I remember seeing 4 motorcycle cops at the scene.
#5) The car gets moved out of the way, and my poor baby is laying partly in the entrance to the BP station.
#6) People are thinning out and a guy shows up asking me if I am okay, explaining the is the drivers father.
I am not too friendly towards him, but do aknowledge him. I am busy trying to fill out all the crap on the forms the police officer gave me. I notice several cars are pulled over and police are talking to them, and at that point realize lots of folks witnessed the accident.
#7) My "attending" officer (Andrew) gives me my license , registration, etc. back to me and informs me of the charges against the young man. I think it is just an "illegale lane change".
Nowoffers to help me get the bike uprighted........ finally baby gets up....... ouch.
Still more to do and he offers a tow truck. I ask him to let me check out the bike.
While checking over the bike the owner of the BP walks over and ask me if I am okay (apparently a family business), and right after that one of his sons (one of them damn Honda riders
), offers my his assistance and use of any tools I might need. I tell him thanks, and I will get back him on that.

Da-yuum DD, good to hear you didn't get seriously hurt. Wishing you a speedy recovery and sending some good karma waves your way. Are you gonna be alright until yer leg heals back up? There's a bunch of us here who live in VA (including myself) ... if you need anything ... just yell real loud, I wouldn't mind bopping up there lending a hand.
Get better quick!!!

Wow Doug,
Thanks for the write up. Really good by the way.
It is great to read something that someone is not getting slammed for making a mistake caused by inexperience. Yea, It could have been worse, then a slamming would have been in order. I think we need to take our hats off to the kid's dad. Because of his upbringing, the kid owned up to it and did not try to run from it. Good kids make mistakes too! Thank God it was not worse. Hopefully he takes this experience with him. Just like any one else that reads this, we are carrying experience with us from past mistakes.
Anyway!!! Kudos to you also for not totally losing your cool. It says alot about your character.

Doug, a story for the ages. A lot can be learned from reading it, just sorry you had to live it. But, live you did and that's the best part of all.
It's funny, I don't like a single cop that I don't know but I like every single one that I do know. After all, they are just people like the rest of us. And, I find that a great many of them are bikers as well or would at least like to be. I remember early on when I finally got brave enough to ride while wearing a novelty helmet (I say that like it was more than a year ago but it wasn't), some friends and I pulled into a gas station to fill up. A city cop pulls in behind us and right up next to me. I was thinking, oh no here goes with the helmet BS. But he was only interested in where we were from and where we were going and expressed how jealous he was that, on such a perfect riding day, he had to work instead of being out there amongst us on his Road King.
Anyway, glad to hear you are okay, all things considered. Hope you and snappy can get things put back together and back out on the road very soon.

I'll have to agree with Jake..not all are shitbags...I used to be one as well. I had to medical retire after injuries received during a foot chase. Anyway did Snappy make it out ok ? Hopefully he didnt have to much trauma.
