Default Removing Tank from Softtail?

Now I'm a Dyna guy, and I know this is about a softtail, and I did post this in the softtail section as well, but I know this crew is pretty good, and helpful, so here goes....

Uncle has a 2007 softtail standard, he wants to remove the tank today, and asked for help.....havent removed a tank before, what all is involved, and how bad is it? I know the bolts wont be bad, but draining the tank, and how much room underneath do we have for wiring?

Thanks for your help!!

Default RE: Removing Tank from Softtail?

I just took mine off and had a bit of a mess but mostly from removing the cross-over hose. The quick-disconnect auto seals when undone so don't worry about that. Be sure to remove your battery or disconnect it in the event of a spark. I did as it says in the manual and got some tubing, stuck a bolt in one end and clamped it shut and then plugged it onto the exposed nipple. However, I tried to do it with just two hands and, of course, the fuel continued to flow from the cross-over hose until I could get that plugged. The problem is that moment in time when you remove the first clamp. Have a hemostat or some other bolt hand to stop the fuel flow from the crossover but better yet, have a second set of hands. Once you've got that, pull tank up a little and disconnect the tank fuel wiring on the left side of the main frame backbone and if you've already removed the bolts - the tank should then come off.Have some rags handy and work in a well ventilated area with a fan blowing if at all possible. Hope this helps.
