Last year I bought my first Harley, had all Hondas previously. I was looking at Sportsters and a few guys at work knew I was looking, kept asking for advice. Finally one day one of them asked me if I had decided which Skirster model I had decided on.

I bought a Dyna.

Very happy with the Low Rider.

Went to the dealer looking for a sportster - left with a lowrider.

Sporty's are too light a bike for me. Also too small a frame. I like some weight between my legs ... A 648 lb (dry) Wide Glide was the ticket for me.

started out with a used sportster and rode it for a year before I felt I needed to upgrade. (common theme around here for good reason)
Good thing I went used, since I got every dime back and really got comfortable on the street with the sporty.
moved up to the dyna lowrider and am finding theLR is not as nimble as the Sporty, but so much smoother and comfortable.
I dont regret the path I took. Especially going used. Got me up to speed on the road and the dyna will keep me happy for many years to come.
The sportster was not going to do that. The highway riding and two-up clinched it for me.

I also went in for a Sporty and left on a Low Rider after riding both. There were a lot of 1 and 2 year old Sportys sitting in the showroom that day.

I regret not listening to everyone that tried to talk me out of a Sportster.
LOVE the Dyna now and do not regret trading up other than the beating that I took,
by the Stealer in the process.[:@]

BTW, take the MSF class ASAP, it could very well save your life.

I rode a Sporty for years (1989-2003). One of the reasons I bought my bike is because the big engine, larger overall size, but sportster front end. I really like that combo and how you can whip either around in the twisties.

Now, if you could get your hands on one of these sportsters, I'd be hard tempted to suggest it over the low rider.

Couple of my buddies asked this same question last month

I told them both the same thing, (they owned sporties)I said I have NEVER seen anyone trade back to a sporty after going to a Dyna. Its probably happened but I have never seen it.

Sportster is a beautiful bike and your saving money. But if your learning, learn on a Dyna it won't take long for you to realize why. When I got my Sportster I rode on it. Riding the Dyna Wide GlideI'm a part of it.

Mines a 98 Lowrider that I bought back the first of February and I love it. Couldn't afford any thing new and since there are only a couple of styles of Harley's that I like anyway, this one fit my pocket book. No offense to all the full dresser's and sportster people out there, but I would go with the Lowrider. Mine being one of the last years for the evo motors makes it more special to me and it has plenty of power, a few simple mods to the carb makes for a bat out of hellp for someone just starting out. Good luck with which ever way you go.
