Have looked on motor for serial number but unable to locate. any ideas where they would put it on a pan?

HD didn't put VIN numbers on the frame 'til 1970. The VIN is on the left side of the cases on a '56, IIRC. If you can't find a VIN on the motor you've got big problems, as in "No VIN? Go straight to jail!"

Does your frame have rear shocks? If so, is the swing arm round or square tubing?

65 pan with 66 tanks (65 still had the l/s internal gas valve) with metal banjo crossover gas line. "raceway" style cleaner with (unable to see real close) stock linkert! that primary cover was on 65 & 66 flh's the screw up front when removed allows you to grease the comp sprocket. which is useless since you need to remove the cover to adjust your pushrod and 3 finger clutch hub nuts.....mid -late 70's superglide (kayaba ??) front end. either a superglide/FX rear or bobbed and worked fender on back.
looks like original floorboards. don't know how much you paid but if it's less then $5K i'd spend the time to do a correct restoration. say another $5k easy. the sheetmetal will put a big dent in the wallet!

Thanks to Craig you now see pictures of this beast. Someone asked how much was paid for this? Nada, zip, zilch. A big fat 0. I did find the engine numbers and it is 65FL7270. I am learning so much in a short time about this bike. It was given to me as a tinker project. I am not sure what frame it is but there is definately a number stamped in the left side of the tripple tube, C8553. I am guessing the engine is a 65 and not a 56. The man I got this from said it hadn't run in about 25 years. Yes it does have the original Linkert M-74B carb. Ordering a kit for it and will soak the carb for about a week before it even starts to be cleaned or useable for that matter. Thanks a million to everyone's suggestions and guidance in this project. The plan is to clean the carb and see how this thing fires after flushing and filling all fluids. I have a couple of buddies who are eager to assist. Now for parts where can they be obtained? Looking for original if at all possible. The gas tanks are shot due to tar slug and internal rust so if anyone knows where to have them redone I would appriciate the info. I plan to keep posting progress as time permits but if you like the old school engines and what not keep coming back.

 

Just as I thought. I would go 2 ways with that bike. Take that cool chopped FLH look all the way with custom paint etc or restore it to original mid 60's Electra Glide. Those E-start '65 pans are getting good money in original condition.
