That is a top drawer parts guy! Lots of guys do that on their own out of the catalog but that is the first time I've seen a parts guy care enough to do it on their own! Sweet!

I went to the dealership yesterday and wanted to pick up a High flow air cleaner for my bike. I said give the the SE one. He says are you sure. I said yeah why. Then he went and showed me what harley has done with the products they were selling. He said the old SE A/C were good. But Harley had a falling out with K&N and they now were making there own. He said the Filter that comes with the SE high flow kit is junk, and it will fall apart. The stock one was better constructed. He said he could build me a better kit from the harley parts and the K&N A/C. So instead of getting the SE kit with the inferior filter and the dull backing plate. I got a kit that he put together with the K&N filter and a chrome backing plate. made sense to me So I said lets do it. Paid the same amount and he threw in some loctite to boot.

Anyone here ever hear of this and have the same situation. Naybe I got lucky and got a good parts guy there. Or maybe I got ripped off. I am not quite sure. But his explanation seemed reliable so I went with it.

Mine is black rim. Is that K&N?
You have the dry paper HD model that I referred to upthread. Take off your A/C cover and it'll say "dry element do not add oil". It's a slightly better version of the crappy blue/white ones that were falling to pieces.

A K&N will be black-rimmed, but, it'll have a reddish element and, I believe, slightly taller.

Those as*holes, when I first bought the kit I asked for a K&N filter and the parts guy said it comes with K&N filter, though when I looked at the filter, it looked completely dry, unlike the K&N filters that I have seen on my car.

When I was looking at buying a new bike, I talked to a buddy of mine who owns a bike shop and he told me about the junk Harley filters, so I was going to ask about it when I ordered the bike. After I got to the dealer, I didn't even have to ask, he told me about the junk filters and said that they have been doing just as your dealer suggested and ordering pieces separately with a good K&N filter.

I have to say that I am very glad that I bought my bike where I did, they have been great with everything so far and after hearing some of the horror stories on the forum, I consider myself very lucky to have a great dealership to deal with.

Anybody have a suggestion as to how long I should go before I pull the filter off and clean and re-oil? I think the documentation says something rediculous like 50,000 miles. That seems like a hell of a lot. How long do you guys go before you clean and re-oil?
Actually, that's accurate if the vehicle does not see dusty, off road conditions. They really can go a long time without cleaning. On our open element bikes (no hood to hide under) you will want to clean it when it's dirty enough to be unsightly. They actually filter better the dirtier they get, up to a point. It will look like total *** long before it's dirty enough to cause a problem.

The HD-0800 is the one to get. Order from Fox Performance for $36 to save some $$$.

In a nutshell, blue SE filters are junk and disintegrate, the new black SE filters are better, K&N beats all.

I'm running the K&N HD 0800 and have used K&N on every vehicle I've owned for 16 years but I'm certainly not blind to the special issues you open yourself up to when running them. The newer SE paper element is not all that bad if you live in dusty environments so I understand and appreciate where the moco is going with this. I bet the filteration is far greater then the K&N and the max flow is probably not too far off the mark. Notice that K&N is offering 'pre filters' for several models including the hd-0800 filter? This is basically a UNI filter style foam element 'surround' which negates any advantage the K&N has anyway except for the reusable angle. Just some thoughts.....

At the local rally the guys that dynoed my bike said that the screaming eagle kit was some junk. He installed the arlen ness big sucker kit. I've noticed a difference between the two. The screaming eagle kit sounded like it was sucking air the arlen ness kit doesn't make this sound.
