bearing replacement
Separate issues. Just [amazing] coincidence your stator goes shortly after IPB work. Did your stator fry on its own, or was it taken out by a self-destructing rotor? If it smoked on its own, you may have a charging/regulating problem. More common (with '06 Dynas) is the screws of the 2-piece rotor shearing/loosening and the parts shreading the stator. I don't know of anyone getting the MoCo to pay for a rotor/stator fix outside warranty.
Let us know how this turns out for you.

self destructed by the broken off screws. I cannot accept that it's pure coincidence...it HAS to be an issue related to design/alignment with the whole primary/trans system. It is defective, and I don't care what the moco says about it...I will fight them to the death now on this issue because I cannot, and will not accept the expense in having to do this every 2 years!
There is an upgraded part (rotor) that is a 1-piece welded unit. I think it was stock in the '07 and newer. There's also a SE Rotor/Compensator and Stator Set that some have upgraded to. Lotsa folks have had their rotor come apart, independent of any IPB issues. I can't blame you for thinking there's a connection, but sometimes lightning does strike twice. Both times I had my IPB fail, I impressed upon the service writer that I wanted my rotor THOROUGHLY examined for shearing/loosening screws (they were oblivious to the '06 Rotor issue, let alone the IPB issue). My rotor has been OK both times (knock wood!).
If you get stuck picking up the tab on the rotor/stator, check with Mud; I think he has the parts interchangeability data, and the SE upgrade kit/parts numbers.

I have the IPB issue rearing it's head. Serves me right for all the times I said the bike has been trouble free. Kind of sounds like a rotor being turned. Glad it didn't happen before Goldendale!!!! I'll just get the parts and fix it myself, I need to pull the shift shaft and change the primary cover any ways.
Sorry to hear you're facing the IPB issue, Rick. It's a pretty big coin to drop making it right with '07 IP & Tranny cases; why not have HD foot the bill for the work & parts? Of course, if it's the first failure, you're likely to just get a new bearing & race. But when/if it goes the next time, you should get the upgraded cases fix. I got the upgraded (doweled) cases with my 2nd failure in May, outside of warranty. Best of luck with it, however you decide to proceed.
I have had my Inner Primary Bearing replaced twice before I knew this was a common problem with most '06 Dyna's. After reading this thread I went back to my local Dealership and had the Service Manager call Harley. Harley agreed there was an issue, but since I just recently had the inner primary bearing changed, they did not want to go back into the bike right now. However, they did give me a Reference Number and assured me if the bearing went out again all I had to do was refer to this Reference Number and they would then replace the Inner Primary Housing and the Transmission Case with the dowelled items. When the bearing fails again, as I am sure it will, I will let you all know if Harley lives up to this promise, or not. Actually, I will be shocked if they do, just have to wait and see though. My first bearing went at 8,000 miles and the second at 18,000 miles, so I have about 7,000 miles to go before the next possible failure. lol

PKelly, appreciate all your info! Very helpful. Did you have much of a fight with the moco to get the inner primary/trans case taken care of at no cost? I don't see why they won't just do this on the wife's bike as this is the 2nd time on hers as well! The bike is at my friend's indy shop now. We're going with the updated rotor/stator setup. Hopefully this will eliminate this problem in the future. For anyone going inside to change out the rotor/stator, this is an easy straightforward process. Shouldn't take too much time to do the job (Maybe a couple hours). Of course, if you're going deeper, like doing the bearing replacement, it's more involved, and you'll need the puller etc. I'm going to find the thread re "finally..." and print that out in hopes it will help in my fight. I've spoken to a lawyer, and he's going to review this whole thing to see if we have an avenue to pursue the moco on this whole deal...stand by for more info as I get it! We all know it's not right that one person gets relief, i.e. free bearing replacement, while someone else has to pay $50 (or anything at all) to get it fixed....and one guy gets the whole ipc and trans case but the company won't touch it for someone else...anyway, best of luck to everyone dealing with this issue!
I think I can rule out the IPB issue on mine now. I have taken the advice of others on how to narrow it down and tried it. Using a mechanics stethescope I listened to the primary and get absolutely no change in sound with the clutch enaged, dis-engaed, trans in neutral or in gear. As a last ditch check I drained the oil and there was less metal on the magnet than the last time I serviced it. Good and bad here......I still have a noise to find.
