Default Forward Controls & Neutral

I put HD forward controls on the 09 SB. I decided to go the "quick" route and not pull the primary. I also left in the mid shifter shaft. I'm okay with the look and I didn't really want to cut the shaft until I was sure I liked the forwards.

So far I've only had a chance to test ride it. It was a little hard to find neutral but its there (somewhere). I heard the longer gear shifter in the forward kit will help out with the neutral.

The Question(s) - Does the longer shifter help? Can the longer gear shifter be install without pulling the primary? It looks like there may be a little room to "work it" but I don't want to start prying and banging on things if it can't be done.

The longer arm helped my wife on her 06 dyna and it can be replaced without taking off the primary. There is a couple of threads here about it, this is a good place to start forward-controls-now-i-cant-find-neutral-2

This is not the first time I've heard of the elusive neutral situation. Personally, I haven't had any difficulty finding mine since making the switch to forward controls though. Lovin' the forwards.

Get rid of the stock tootsie roll shifter and buy a longer one and finding gears wont be a hassle.

Thanks for the reply's - I think I'll leave it alone for now and see how it goes.

Later (couple of weeks) I'm going to change out the primary cover to polished aluminum so I think I'll have to remove the mid shifter shaft then and decide on the gear shifter.

Otherwise the forwards feel pretty good - they are a little more forward then they were on my sportster but I'm adjusting (all part of the process).

You could put a second hole lower in the front shifter arm to reduce the ratio/leverage. If you dont like it, put the shift rod back in the top hole and and revisit removing the primary.

I don't believe that there is any difference in the setup of the shift linkage and primary between a 06 and 07 fxd. I felt the same sitting on the ground in my drive way and decided to could not be done. But I went back and read the post here and told myself if they can do it I can. Give it another try after reading all the post that were provided for you. Good luck.

Wow - I was just about to ask if anyone was using the Kuryaken Forwards out here and if this was a problem. Thanks man. They are a little more expensive than the HDs, but looking at the instruction sheets, they don't mention anything about replacing that back lever. I have heard that they are better quality than the HDs, also. Does anyone else have experience with the Krury's?
